Dugald River

Throughout the 2021/22 summer I was fortunate enough to work at MMG's Dugald River lead-zinc-silver mine. My time consisted of technical service work focused around drill and blast processes. This was supplemented by crew time underground working in a variety of situations. The FIFO roster provided a great insight into this lifestyle and the experience overall has shown me the perks to look for in a Graduate mining engineering role. The team and people I worked with were top notch and I have learnt so much from them. It was great to experience hard rock mining in such a safe and professional environment. My projects included analysing drill down time due to cleanout/re-drills, winze timing optimisation and stope brow performance optimisation. These projects have given me a great grasp of what hard rock mining involves as a drill and blast engineer.

My intern role at DataMine Brisbane includes supporting MineScape development and enhancements, whilst also aiding our customers in their queries. This involves modelling site datasets, resolving issues and assist in the creation of new learning material.

Tieri, Queensland, Australia

During the summer I was lucky enough to spend 10 weeks at Oaky Creek Coal's underground longwall operation near Tieri, QLD. Throughout the vacation program I spent time both underground and on surface to gain an appreciation of how the mine operates. I was stationed in the Technical Services department under the supervision of the Gas Drainage engineer, where I learned in depth about the gas emissions and precautions taken in underground coal. My project was focused on the correlation between underground gas emissions and the readings received at the riser/plant. My report identified one issue in the underground manometer system which has since been rectified (water dilution).The experience was a fantastic chance to put into practice what I have learnt in my mining courses and expose me to many new concepts. I found the technical side of mine management engaging and thoroughly enjoyed my time underground with development, production and drilling crews. Over the summer it was great to get away camping at new places with new friends, all the while learning so much. Overall, my time at Oaky Creek was invaluable to my learning and career exposure.
