Mumbai with Dr. Nishigandha Naik who was then Head, Imaging and Cancer Biology Department at Piramal Lifesciences Ltd.Formyl peptide receptor (FPR) are chemoattractant receptors, which belong to the G protein coupled receptor (GPCR) family. These receptors are mainly present on professional phagocytes activated by n-formyl peptides released from bacteria and mitochondria, leading to the trafficking of phagocytes towards sites of bacterial invasion and tissue damage. Other than phagocytic leukocytes, FPRs have been also detected in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), dendritic cells, astrocytes and hepatocytes, etc. Furthermore, stage dependent increase in FPR expression has been seen in glioma. Their biological significance in these cells and tumors is not well understood. Earlier from our lab, it has been reported that functions stimulated by FPRs were found to be defective in PMNL (Polymorphonuclear Leukocytes) of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients. Over the past few years, data from several groups have indicated that these receptors might act in a more complex manner. Hence, the studies were aimed to decipher role of formyl peptide receptor in transformed cells and thereby to understand their function in non-hematopoietic and cancerous cells. Work has been carried out using breast cancer cell lines as a model system for solid tumors and bcr-abl positive cell lines as well as mononuclear leukocytes and polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL) fractions from peripheral blood samples of CML patients as model system for CML.
