Phd ResearcherUniversity Of Central Lancashire Jan 2023 - PresentUnited KingdomHomes in the UK account for 22% of carbon emissions, with 45% of that attributed to space heating energy. To achieve the UK's 2050 net-zero carbon target, it is necessary to construct highly insulated homes for both new build and retrofit projects. Data from 97 Passivhaus dwellings in the UK indicates that mean observed space heating demand is 10.8 kWh/m2/annum, while the average UK home requires 145 kWh/m2/annum and a new build home requires 50 kWh/m2/annum. However, as the operational energy of buildings decreases, the embodied carbon content will increase, making it essential to establish the whole-life energy and carbon consumption of UK homes built to Passivhaus standards compared to non-Passivhaus standards. My fully funded PhD research will be conducted by energy and carbon modelling of five UK Passivhaus homes, with the aim of providing policymakers with a tool to assess the effectiveness of Passivhaus homes in reducing carbon emissions in the long term. -
