I am passionate about science, storytelling and working with children. I know how to explain complicated concepts to children in a visual way which they can understand through my workshops, podcasts and stories. I love inspiring children with a love of science and literacy.I currently work with schools and various groups of children in Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. I have a catalogue of 15 different stories and 8 science workshops.I have written a series of books "The DNA Detectives - To Catch A Thief" (won ASE Book Award 2018) and "The DNA Detectives - The Smuggler's Daughter" & "The DNA Detectives - The Stone Age Mystery". My fourth book "The DNA Detectives - The Riddle of the Viking treasure" will hopefully be ready for Christmas! They are the first fiction books where children use DNA to solve a crime. As well as the exciting adventure children learn about DNA as they read the book. The books are accompanied by web links and a live workshop to provide a cross curricular resource which combines science and literacy. I am currently writing a book "Teaching Evolution and Inheritance to Primary School children" to help teachers teach this difficult topic.I have written science-based articles for "The Week Junior Magazine", "Primary Times" and "Teaching times". I hope to write many more to help teachers with ideas for teaching difficult topics within the science curriculum.I act as a science consultant for a publisher for non-fiction science books and for companies creating online scientific tools, curriculum content and animations. It is so important that science is factually correct and that when communicating it to children it doesn't give them any misconceptions. I have a number of wonderful projects underway at the moment. One is an exciting workshop teaching Primary School pupils about classification using DNA. We will demonstrate traditional methods of classification and compare it with modern methods of comparing DNA sequences. The children will have a go at DNA extraction, PCR, running their samples on a gel and sequence editing. We are hoping to get funding soon, so we can take this workshop into schools next year. Finally, my biggest challenge, but a dream I have had for a long time. I am trying to set up a Science Centre in Norfolk. I want to try to increase the number of students taking STEM subjects in our area. I also want to try and tackle the STEM skills gap by creating a link between education and science businesses and specialists in Norfolk. If you have any advice for me or can help in any way do get in touch!
