From 2000 to 2009, Todd served as a journalist for the Pulitzer Prize-winning Rocky Mountain News where he was charged with covering issues of environmental, regulatory, and political importance to the greater Colorado community. Over this 9-year period, Todd successfully published over 100+ investigative, explanatory, and public service features per year; allowing him to develop broad expertise on a wide range of controversial issues through in-depth reporting, writing, and analysis on high-profile environmental topics to include Colorado's ongoing struggles with water rights, wildlife endangerment, energy conservation, and the natural gas boom. He additionally profiled gubernatorial candidates, Bill Ritter and Bob Beauprez, in the 2006 State Governor election; offering comprehensive explications on their lives, accomplishments, and experiences. Of particular note, Todd was proud to earn recognition for four, highly-prestigious industry awards for “Beyond the Boom” (2008), “The Last Drop” (2004), “Killer in the Herd” (2002), and “Fish Story” (2001).
