The United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID) through its Water Sector Support Programme, established a Water Sector Support Unit based in Mpumalanga. This was a collaborative partnership between DFID-SA, the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF), the Department for Provincial and Local Government and the South African Local Government Association. Its key functions were to support the government programmes that aimed to devolve the powers and functions in the water and sanitation sector from the national level to the local government structures.
