Hasan U. Akay is the chair of Automotive Engineering and Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Atilim University, Ankara, Turkey. He served at Atilim University as Provost from March 2010 until July 2017, where he was responsible for the University's academic programs, including research, technology transfer, and special education programs. Before joining Atilim University, he had been with IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis) for thirty years as a professor of mechanical engineering, where he also held administrative positions as department chair and associate dean of engineering. He was the founding director of the popular Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Institute (MURI) program at IUPUI from 2005 to 2009, which offers research opportunities to undergraduates. He has over several years of research and teaching experience in the development of computational algorithms for the solution of multiphysics problems, including parallel and grid computing algorithms for large-scale problems with a broad range of applications in fluid dynamics, solid dynamics, and heat and mass transfer using finite element and finite volume methods. His primary activities in these areas include research, teaching, development, and technical consulting. He has published over 170 journal and conference papers in these areas. He holds a B.S. degree from the Middle East Technical University at Ankara in 1967; and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Texas at Austin in 1969 and 1974, respectively. He has conducted numerous research projects funded by various government and private agencies. He has received several professional honors at IUPUI, including chancellor’s professor, distinguished mentor, outstanding leadership, outstanding research professor, and teaching excellence awards. He is a Fellow Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Senior Member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), and Member of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE).
