Hasan Cem Çal (b. 1994, Istanbul) graduated from the Radio, Television, and Film Bachelor’s Programme of Istanbul Bilgi University. He completed his graduate degree in the same university with his thesis titled “The Ethics of Power: A Comparative Analysis of Nietzsche’s Will to Power and Spinoza’s Conatus” in the Department of Philosophy and Social Thought under the advisory of Zeynep Talay Turner. His essays and articles on film, photography, music, literature, poetry, and philosophy have appeared in print and online publications, including Manifold, Apart, Ayrıntı Dergi, Üretimhane, and K24. Over a hundred Hasan Cem Çal’s essays have been published in Manifold. He edited the translations of canonical texts of such authors as Nick Land, Laboria Cuboniks, and Gene Youngblood, who incorporate philosophical thought and media theory in their respective works. Çal also translated and edited the translations of radical figures of contemporary thought, including Oxana Timofeeva, Mark Fisher, Matt Colquhoun, Steven Shaviro, Adrian Ivakhiv, and Anna Greenspan. Together with Furkan Keçeli, he co-authored the book Variations of Music, bringing together theoretical analyses of various types of music, from spectral music to free jazz. Çal’s article “Expanded Cinema,” which defines the art of cinema as an expansive medium spanning the entirety of moving image technologies rather than a singular medium, was published as a booklet by Manifold. Currently acting as editor in the editorial board of the online platform Manifold, Çal is also among the co-founders of the Chute Film Collective, which focuses on experimental film and is based in The Hague and Istanbul. Çal co-produces Wax Podcast, which centers on detailed analyses of contemporary cinema. He is pursuing a PhD in Communication Sciences at Kadir Has University with a full scholarship. His primary areas of interest include film philosophy, experimental film and video, media theory, contemporary art, accelerationism, and musicology.
