Established in 2020 by Hasfa Mago, the Book Drive - Read to Learn Foundation is a homegrown Ugandan non-profit organization, led by women, that places a strong focus on early literacy development, with an emphasis on fostering community-driven interventions.Rooted in personal experience, the foundation's origins lie in its initial incarnation as a business entity, primarily engaged in producing and distributing children's content through storybooks and libraries. However, through ongoing engagement with various communities, a pressing need for early literacy development emerged, especially within low-income households and underserved areas.Here are the core areas where we intervene:Early Literacy Development:Our Ghetto Book Clinics are a response to the limited access to pre-primary education within underserved slum communities, often referred to as "ghettos." These clinics conduct weekly read, learn, and spell sessions in slums such as Katanga, Nabweru, and Nsambya.Community Libraries:Our initiative to make learning community-centric involves identifying public spaces and transforming them into vibrant reading and learning centers. The Read to Learn Foundation team hosts weekly reading days at these libraries to cultivate a culture of learning.Content Creation and Dissemination:A core aspect of our programming revolves around crafting reading and learning materials featuring authentic African characters that inspire children and open up realms of possibilities.Youth Development and Mentorship:Through the Literacy Champions Fellowship, we engage annually with young individuals aged 12-18. These youth are directly mentored by the Read to Learn Foundation team and a distinguished group of mentors spanning diverse developmental spheres.Our journey is fueled by a profound commitment to nurturing literacy from a young age, amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities, and igniting transformative change in the lives of the next generation.
