Sports And Health Editor

As a student journalist, I served for one year as the Sports and Health Editor for a weekly community newspaper at York University in Toronto, Canada. This involved following and covering the activities of a wide variety of varsity sports teams and clubs as well as writing and editing articles about physical, mental, and sexual health. In total, I wrote and/or edited 89 articles over the course of 28 issues of the newspaper. I also worked closely with other editors to create synergies between the different sections of the newspaper and to expand the newspaper's online presence.Responsibilities included:• Conducting interviews in person and via phone and e-mail• Gathering and organizing relevant information from a variety of sources, included newspaper articles, journal articles, archives, books, surveys, data sets, and more• Regularly writing and/or editing a wide variety of articles, including previews of varsity and professional sporting events, profiles of athletes, and detailed analyses of health-care trends• Covering events such as the 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, the 2015 CIS Soccer Championships, the 2015 Canadian Federal Election, and more• Copy-editing articles (according to Canadian Press style) for publication in print and online• Contributing to other sections of the newspaper, including News and Arts• Designing the pages of the Sports and Health section of the newspaper in Adobe InDesign• Using Adobe Photoshop to design and/or edit images to be used in articles• Recruiting and mentoring contributors for the newspaper and editing their work for publishing
