I initially started baking at an amateur level, however found I quite quickly began to develop and enhance my skills. This prompted me to establish an Instagram page called @cakes_by_hassan to share my work and gain inspiration, however I also found many people were interested in purchasing cakes from me. Overtime due to the relationships built with customers and other bakers, I was able to grow my social media presence which currently boasts over 30 thousand followers. Although my business started at humble beginnings by providing cupcakes for event stalls, it has now branched out and caters to weddings, birthdays, large scale events and intimate occasions. An example of this is being a premium stall holder for the last 3 consecutive years at Manchester Eid Festival which welcomes over 10 thousand attendees to the Manchester United Football Stadium Carpark. Running a business has allowed me to gain plethora of skills and experience that can be applied to a wide range of settings. Skills include business acumen, strategic planning, understanding target audiences, providing consistently good customer service and effective marketing. In addition to this, the baking skills I have developed include a keen attention to detail, excellent time management and organization, identifying issues and strategies for improvement as well as enhancing my creativity. This was with the aim of raising young peoples’ aspirations, improving awareness of educational pathways to university, and safeguarding access to higher education for all. I worked with underrepresented target groups within higher education, such as students whose parents did not go to university, students on free school meals, students with a disability, students living under local authority care, and students living in areas where progression into higher education is lower than expected. The programmes work is carried out at Manchester Metropolitan University campuses as well as schools and colleges across the North West. The role required me to have a great deal of professionalism, strong interpersonal skills, clear communication, flexibility and confidence as I am often working in unfamiliar environments with a wide demographic of people. These values intend to “promote, defend and extend the rights of students and develop and champion strong students’ unions.”The role of an elected delegate is to influence the national student movement by voting on motions at national conference, as well as electing NUS Officers who work full time, campaigning on the issues voted on at the conference. National Conference occurs once a year and it’s where elected delegates will get to have a say in what the national union believes and campaigns for. My role as a delegate has a range of responsibilities during the conference such as voting on policy for the NUS, electing new NUS leadership and holding previous NUS officers to account for their previous work. I currently hold the role of Chair of the MMU First Aid Society and have previously held the positions of vice-chair and treasurer. My role in the society began with the establishment of a working relationship and formation of a Links unit with the UKs leading first aid charity St John Ambulance. As chair of the society my role requires me to manage committee members and communicate with our external partners in St John Ambulance, the Students Union and Human Resources of the university. I also have responsibilities in controlling the direction of fundraising, filling and submitting grant requests to finance the society as well as deciding the spending and budget.I schedule regular first aid sessions to deliver first aid demonstrations and informal advice to students of a wide range of educational backgrounds. Session planning involves preparing presentations and engaging first aid activities, choosing session dates, filling in appropriate risk assessments and ensuring a supply of the correct equipment for the session.
