Hassan Patterson is a self-taught artist from Boston, Mass. Inspired by Saturday morning cartoons, his passion for art and all things creative began at a young age. With encouragement from his family and friends, Hassan began to study the art of comic books and fantasy illustration. Artists such as Frank Frazetta, John Buscema, Boris Vallejo and Charles Dana Gibson inspired him. After losing his father at a young age, Hassan found himself without a male mentor, school averse and an introverted kid, finding guidance and strength from his mother. Hassan credits his passion for art with saving his life and ultimately leading him from a high school drop out to earning his GED and learning a vocation. An ITT Technical School graduate, he learned drafting and engineering. In 1990, Hassan moved to Rockledge, Fla. and graduated from Brevard Community College (now Eastern Florida State College) with his AA. Honing drawing and painting skills in his spare time, Hassan became a computer-aided design (CAD) drafter for NASA when his boss made him an ultimatum after reviewing his impressive portfolio. Beginning a new adventure into the art world, in 1995 Hassan worked hard to become a successful commercial artist completing projects for Rhino Records, Sony/Columbia Music, Universal, Ron Jon Surf Shop, Disney, Maui & Sons, and NBC. In 2000, Hassan traveled to live and study art in Florence, Italy. While overseas he learned techniques in photography and painting. In 2006, he became a freelance photographer for magazines such as Lowrider, Maxim and Tiki magazines. Hassan’s interest in photography was inspired by watching his mother with her camera and gear. He credits his mother as a key influencer and supporter of his career. From his humble beginnings with his mother’s purchase of his first Minolta film camera to his epiphany and evolution working with instructors in Italy, Hassan has a passion for bringing the beauty out of every surrounding he is in while photographing. Currently, Hassan works for Northrop Grumman as a Sr. Principal Media Production Analyst and continues to evolve as an artist in the Brevard community and beyond. Hassan has a passion for giving back to a community that has given so much to him and volunteers his time with youth to spark the same passion in the next generation that helped him overcome his life’s challenges. Hassan continues to expand his knowledge base of art and recently has begun to share his knowledge through teaching art classes in local schools and during painting events.
