I am a pediatric and adult rheumatologist developing novel solutions to improve the care of children and adults with rheumatic diseases. I spend half of my time caring for patients with rheumatic diseases in academic clinics and hospitals, and the other half in pursuing creative research projects. My clinical interests are adolescents and young adults with rheumatic diseases and treating children and adults with autoinflammatory diseases. My research interests include autoinflammatory diseases, health technology, and medical education. I am fascinated by challenging problems and discovering creative ways to solve them. I created a research study that leveraged mobile phones to recruit patients and collect information about body temperature in health and disease and redefined "normal" and "febrile" temperatures. I also led a study of the utility of wearable thermometers to detect fevers in children with periodic fever syndromes or autoinflammatory diseases. I enjoy using and studying social media, exploring how patients use it to learn more about their health and connect others with similar conditions as well as how physicians and researchers may use social media to learn medicine, recruit patients for clinical trials, and better understand population health.I love teaching students, medical trainees, colleagues, patients, and others about rheumatology. Through my writing, leading workshops, delivering lectures, or at the bedside, I manage to make the field of rheumatology interesting and approachable to all. To encourage medical trainees to become self-directed learners, I am developing a high-efficiency online collaborative learning platform to improve medical education.I lead a Latino Rheumatology Clinic that aims to deliver culture-sensitive care to Spanish-speaking patients with rheumatic diseases.
