About Michael Hawkins

Michael developed a passion for software development and entrepreneurship at a very young age. Combining these passions with a talent for problem-solving has led to over 20 years of delivering innovative healthcare software solutions, positively impacting millions of lives, and establishing an admirable record of leading organizations from start-up to successful exits.Michael is a well-rounded and enthusiastic Chief Technology Officer and Software Architect. He has extensive knowledge of Healthcare workflows, SaaS-based systems, web development, mobile development, enterprise B2B solutions, and FHIR/HL7 integrations including designing and building Open API platforms for 3rd party consumption. In addition to stints at Iomega Corporation and IBM, Michael has been involved with many software start-up organizations including MEDHOST and Vivify Health, both leaders in healthcare software solutions. Michael received his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Stephen F. Austin State University and has repeatedly demonstrated the ability to build high-performing teams that deliver best-in-class enterprise software.Michael was one of the original investors and the fourth employee at Vivify Health. Due to the significant and rapid growth achieved across hundreds of hospitals and large health systems, Vivify Health was acquired by Optum (a division of United Health Group) in 2019. Today, Vivify Health serves the digital health needs across multiple lines of business inside of both Optum and United Healthcare, as well as its traditional base of hospital and health system customers in both the US and Canada.Prior to Vivify Health, Michael spent twelve years at MEDHOST, joining in the company’s early start-up stage. Under Michael’s direction as Vice President of Software Development reporting to the CEO, MEDHOST became the leading Emergency Department solution serving over 500 hospitals and 10 million patients annually. MEDHOST introduced the first-ever touchscreen EMR for the healthcare industry, and other innovations such as geographic bed/facility views, patient self-service kiosks, multi-touch data visualization, and an enterprise operational visibility engine. In 2012, MEDHOST successfully exited through its acquisition by Healthcare Management Systems (HMS) who later rebranded their entire company to MEDHOST due to its strong brand reputation.

  • Medhost
    Vice President Of Development
    Medhost Jun 2011 - Jan 2013
    Franklin, Tn, Us
MEDHOST, the leading Emergency Department solution serving over 500 hospitals and 10 million patients annually, introduced the first-ever touchscreen EMR for the healthcare industry including a rich user experience with geographical floorplans and touchscreen data visualizations. MEDHOST is the #1 Emergency Department Information System in the U.S. and ranked #1 in KLAS.I joined MEDHOST in 2000 shortly after they closed on their A round of funding and stayed with MEDHOST through their acquisition by Healthcare Management Systems (HMS) who later rebranded their entire company to MEDHOST due to the strong brand reputation of MEDHOST. I was part of the team that worked with multiple companies doing due diligence to purchase MEDHOST in 2009. One of those companies complemented us on the efficiency of our software development team and processes. They were impressed with the number of features we were able to deliver given our resources. As I came on board, MEDHOST began branching beyond just patient tracking and into a full EMR solution for the ED. My contributions as architect lead to the creation of MEDHOST’s successful Nurse and Physician Documentation modules as well as Computerized Provider Order Entry. I architected and developed an HL7 integration engine that supported all HL7 integration between MEDHOST and the leading EMRs (Epic, Cerner, Meditech, and many others) for ADT, Order Entry, Document Exchange, Charge Capture, and more. I was also key in architecting MEDHOST's Provider and Facility Charge Capture modules. My architect designs led to a platform that could be highly customized by customers without the need for new software to be written. The support of this customize framework increased customer satisfaction while reducing the need for the software development team to create and maintain unique features per customer. The customizable framework was key in allowing MEDHOST to stay current with new standards without significant source code changes.

MLH Software strives to create high-quality and intuitive applications for the BlackBerry smartphone. Whether it is an application to enhance the productivity of your BlackBerry or an application to entertain, we aim to create a positive experience with our software. Our mission is to develop innovative and user-friendly applications and to provide excellent customer service.Being a diehard BlackBerry user, when BlackBerry announced they were launching their own app store to compete with Apple and Android, I started MLH Software to develop and sell BlackBerry Apps. I developed and launched 12 BlackBerry apps in BlackBerry's App World as well as other third-party stores like MobiHand and Handango. My applications were featured multiple times in these stores and ranked in the top 10 for sales and downloads. My Missed Call Alert App proved to be such a helpful feature add-on to BlackBerry that I had multiple bulk sales to companies that purchased it for their entire support departments. I was asked by David Pogue, personal-tech columnist for The New York Times, to demo my Blurts App during his Keynote opening of INTEROP New York conference in 2009. In 2010 I was featured on Untether.tv with Rob Woodbridge.
  • Ibm Global E-Business Solution
    Software Integration Specialist
    Ibm Global E-Business Solution 1999 - 2000
At the peak of the dot-com bubble, I took a role with IBM Global eBusiness Integration as an Advisory I/T Specialist with a focus on Microsoft technologies. • Ionsoft
    Software Developer And Co-Founder
    Ionsoft 1999 - 1999
Towards the end of my tenure at Iomega, my manager, some co-workers, and I launched our own start-up based on the idea of enabling peer-to-peer file sharing over dial-up networking. We were able to create Windows drivers that allowed users to map a drive that appeared to be local to the Windows OS, but was in fact doing file I/O via TCP/IP over a dial-up internet connection.
  • Iomega
    Software Research Engineer
    Iomega 1997 - 1999
Iomega acquired MSR Development Corporation, a start-up company that specialized in developing device drivers and data backup software. Following the acquisition, the founder started a research group within Iomega. I was the second new hire in this group, working directly with the MSR founder. Our group maintained a start-up-like atmosphere, providing me with my first taste of what working at a start-up was like.As a Software Research Engineer, I was tasked with brainstorming and prototyping software ideas to increase the use of Iomega's Zip, Jaz, and Clik! drive media. At the time, Iomega's business model focused on selling their drives at cost while generating recurring revenue from the sales of Zip, Jaz, and Clik! disks. My projects included developing prototypes for saving full offline versions of websites, time-lapsed webcam captures, MP3 players, and securing digital content on Iomega media. Parts of my work were submitted for patent protection.
