Want to hear about my odd career path? Here's the story.It all started when I was an 18 year-old kid working as a Barista at a local coffee shop in my hometown, Burlington ON. I had just dropped out of my first year at the University of Waterloo. I knew that I wanted to go into business, but I knew the general degree I was taking wasn't for me. I wanted to get niche. My problem? I didn't know enough about my skillset to understand which niche would fit me best. So there I was, floundering while seeing all my friends enter their third year while I was making coffee. What I liked best about the job was the interaction with other people. In my naïve 18-year old head I felt like James Bond when I started rubbing shoulders with local business owners and service providers, who would often come into the shop as it too was locally owned. I would ensure to make conversation whenever it seemed they had a minute just to see what was up with them that day. And of course, I would end every conversation with "If you ever have a student position pop up, keep me in mind."Finally, an opportunity did come up with the top team at IG Private Wealth Management's Burlington office. Initially, it was simple data input. However, as time went on and I presented them with new ideas regarding their online marketing presence, my role evolved to include Copywriting (website, emails, social media posts), Web Design (HTML, CSS, Java), as well as lead generation and tracking using the team's CRM software. I have learned a lot during my years of working with them. Without that experience, I never would have realized my niche is in marketing & content creation.While working with them, I completed my studies at Toronto Metropolitan University in Journalism. I never had the intention of working as a journalist, I sought the skills that came with such an education. I wanted to become an excellent communicator that wasn't limited by any one medium. Now my written, verbal and multimedia communication are honed by one of the most competitive Journalism programs in Canada. What I've done with my work experience is seek the business knowledge I wasn't getting in school. I've learned that my journalistic experience is directly applicable to marketing/sales efforts. I know that multifaceted team players are essential in today's market. That's why I've taken the path I have. So that by the time I arrived at this point in my career I would not only be able to create tangible marketing content, but also use my knowledge to look at the bigger picture and launch high-functioning campaigns.
