I developed an international export business Asia Pacific Machinery Ltd exporting machinery around the globe. While undertaking research in rural Southeast Asian villages, I saw a niche in the markets of emerging economies for the supply of machinery in support of food production and food security. In the first few years I concentrated on a single Southeast Asian market, however, by spending time with those in these markets, getting to know the local business culture, I began exporting to every continent. Key to international business development and the success of Asia Pacific Machinery, is understanding the needs of each region, its local produce, the local economy and its people. Thus, business networking amongst diverse cultures was paramount. I developed relationships with key persons in each region and built up an understanding based on trust. A key component was the early adoption of online tools for marketing and communication as well as an online sales channel.
