Data Science Intern in the Personalization Mission at Spotify

As Head of Corporate Data Science at the Ministry of Justice I oversaw a team of data scientists covering corporate policy analytics and areas of courts, prisons and legal aid. I set strategic direction for the team, regularly meeting with operational and policy colleagues from across the department, to uncover new areas where data science could make an impact on the ministry. I scoped out possibilities and ensured that customers understood the limitations and assumptions of the analysis. Ensuring that models and data were robust, quality assured and fall within ethical guidelines was also a key aspect of my role. As part of the senior leadership team I also engaged in outreach, regularly presenting work internally and externally to spread awareness of current data science projects. In my spare time I also enjoyed mentoring other analysts in data science skills and techniques to spread capacity across government.

As a senior data scientist, in addition to leading and solving existing criminal and legal challenges for the Data Science department, I was responsible for envisioning and prioritising upcoming high-impact projects. For example I conceived and oversaw a project to uncover hidden risk in transactional level data. I led on the scoping and requirements for the project, deciding upon the metrics for success before initiating a literature research and testing phase. This led me to develop a peer group analysis unsupervised clustering model in R. I also oversaw and led Python and Spark projects to create automated data extraction, cleaning and publication pipelines, ensuring results were reproducible and quality assured. Part of my role was to ensure such quality assurance was upheld and to feed into ethical and data security frameworks, ensuring my work and my team’s work was rigorous and ethically sound.

As a data scientist I worked closely with customers during cross-discipline data studio projects, using techniques such as machine learning and visualisation to inform policy decisions. I had a strong focus on innovation, where I created and ran workshops across the directorate to promote new ideas. This included developing and leading a departmental awareness event, focused on the proper use of data and how to avoid misinterpreting analytical findings. During this time I set up regular code and knowledge sharing events within the data science team to develop skills capacity. I worked on a number of major projects, mapping journeys through different aspects of the justice system including identifying systematic reoffending and recidivism.

Worked in the digital department performing electrical certification testing on numerous subsystems and components including full life simulations of power supply units. Oversaw water approvals testing; organising and logging data and keeping colleagues informed. Subsequently learnt the protocol to perform testing in order to accelerate test rate and meet the deadline. Completed a number of mechanical safety assessments on consumer interfaces.

I worked for a year at OC Robotics, a UK based engineering company leading the way in developing adaptable robots for hazardous environments, ranging from bomb disposal to surgery to nuclear decommissioning. I was responsible for the design of new experiments and manufacture of new testing apparatus to generate data for the understanding of frictional wear in the robot joints. To do this I first ran field tests on existing, decommissioned robots to discover the areas of interest. This information allowed me to design and specify a bespoke testing station (designed and FEA tested using Autodesk Inventor) which used weights and a sensitive stepper motor to simulate real conditions, whilst allowing me to accurately measure force readings. This data proved invaluable to empirically proving which coating and design shape was optimal. During this year I also took on added responsibility as primary point of contact for new manufacturing contracts and the overseer of quality control for anodizing component jobs.

The software language was unique and required a logical approach to decipher and understand.Also developed an innovative WC flushing system combining prototyped mechanical and electrical systems.
