Research: Using advanced statistical modeling and Natural Language Processing (machine/deep learning) to scan, parse, and gauge thematic relevancy within spatial language. Currently looking into use of modified Convolutional Neural Networks to allow for greater contextual spatial language extraction beyond traditional and contextually limited methodologies (e.g. SVM, Naïve Bayes, n-gram) Project: Tweets in the Streets• Lead/sole designer of framework for this project, including data cleanup, GIS database creation/admin, programming, and data analysis (PostgreSQL)• The project used HTML5, JavaScript, and both the Twitter and Google Maps Python APIs• The project monitored users’ tweets in real time, gauged if they were pertinent to the research, and sent out a geo-located survey based on the tweet’s textProject: Jack the Ripper historical spatial analysis (http://wc.wludh.ca)• Lead/sole developer, utilizing HTML5 and JavaScript Leaflet with Esri plugins• Significant work wrangling and analysing historic spatial data as many of the places no longer existed in Whitechapel, London, England – utilized historic document research and NLP for categorization (basic discriminative machine learning similar to Support Vector Machine) Other:• Main GIS, database/server admin, and R contact for the Spatial Lab at Laurier University, as the only geographer with a strong Computer Science background. This included helping researchers with all questions pertaining to R or data science/analysis in general• Many researchers required significant help with large spatial datasets (greater than 1 million records) including a research project gauging sentiment of tweets (Twitter) using NLP methodology and sentiment analysis• Was specifically hired on contract by Laurier University to give additional spatial statistics tutorial classes to third year students as the overall failure rate was too high

• Lead point of contact between Esri Canada Higher Education clients for questions/solutions using R and Esri Insights• Created several training courses for Esri Canada’s Higher Education website for use with R• Helped to create plans for researchers with little to no GIS training or background, from how to handle their GIS datasets, to best practices for analysis• Worked on a large, multi-university research projects creating 3D models of York University (BIMs) in Esri CityEngine, porting them into Unity with a bridge created in C, and eventually analysing foot traffic on campus to create better flow. This project was starting the next phase of automatic real time traffic condition analysis at the end of my tenure• Advised multiple clients where GIS knowledge was lacking to build GIS frameworks

MSc Geography – Geomatics, Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo, ONThesis: Integrated Spatial Analysis of Volunteered Geographic InformationDeveloped optimization algorithms and predictive models in R and PythonProject: Spatial optimization algorithms• My research led to the creation of optimization algorithms to determine optimal spatial grains and extents for unstructured user generated (UGD) spatial datasets• The data was harnessed from citizen science projects (SQL and Python API scripts), finessed/massaged, and analysed in R, utilizing spatial quad tree regressive and tessellated spatial area custom algorithms• This spatial optimization won Best Student Paper at the Toronto 2014 ISPRS GIS conferenceProject: RinkWatch (http://www.rinkwatch.org)• Lead/sole developer of RinkWatch: database schema creation, GIS database admin, and all programming and forward facing responsibilities• First iteration utilized PostgreSQL spatial database, Python Django web framework, Google Maps API for spatial aspects, and Apache for hosting• Second iteration utilized Esri ArcServer to publish GIS services while maintaining the PostgreSQL spatial database – utilized Esri JavaScript API for the client interface• Third iteration moved RinkWatch to the ArcGIS Online platform, including the database• Current iterations have now been handed off to a government funded web frameworkOther:• Presented at several conferences in Canada (Toronto: International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) – winning the Best Student Paper Award in 2014, ESRI GIS in Education, CAG) and the US (American Association of Geographers: Chicago, Tampa, Los Angeles, and New Orleans)
