My research interests focus on analytical geochemistry and its application to the environment, with a specific interest in climate change. Previously I have worked in paleo organic geochemistry, with my PhD focussing on reconciling marine and terrestrial records of a hyperthermal event that occurred ca. 56 Ma (the Paleocene Eocene Thermal Maximum), suggested to be the most likely analogue of the Cenozoic for rapid injection of carbon into the ocean-earth system. Prior to this I completed my honours project determining sea-ice extent throughout the Holocene in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago using a novel biomarker proxy, IP25.Currently I am involved in a multi-proxy study investigating the effect of marine diagenesis on tephra. This project aims to determine whether volcanic ash in marine sediments could have a significant role in carbon cycle dynamics.

Lecturer In Organic ChemistryUniversity Of Plymouth Sep 2015 - PresentPlymouth, England, United Kingdom -
Postdoctoral Research FellowNational Oceanography Centre Jul 2013 - Sep 2015Southampton, United KingdomI am currently studying the early diagenesis of tephra at various locations in an effort to constrain the impact of this process on the global carbon cycle. Specific aims include: - Determining the extent and mechanism by which organic carbon preservation in volcanic sediments is dependent on the composition of tephra layers and surrounding sediments.- Investigating the extent and mechanism of secondary carbonate formation in tephra in marine sediments and its dependence on the composition of the tephra and surrounding sediments. - Developing models quantifying organic carbon and carbonate behaviour during marine diagenesis of tephra. -
Phd StudentPlymouth University Oct 2009 - Jan 2014Plymouth, United KingdomDuring my PhD I investigated reconciling marine and terrestrial records in northern Spain of a rapid warming event in Earth's history - the Paleocene - Eocene Thermal Maximum. This project involved method development, extraction and analysis of organic biomarkers from sediments, and use of a variety of organic geochemical equipment including column chromatographic methods, solid phase extraction, gas chromatography systems (including flame ionisation detection, mass spectrometry and isotope ratio), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and stable isotope and elemental analysis. -
ConsultantPlymouth University Jul 2011 - Jul 2013Plymouth, United KingdomDuring my PhD I also worked part time undertaking consultancy for an oil service company,Kernow Analytical Technology. This involved using a proprietary technique (T-SEP; http://www.kat-lab.com/t-sep/index.html) to analyse the wax composition of crude oils for application to flow assurance problems. Regular use and maintenance of high temperature gas chromatography - flame ionisation detection was necessary for this role, as well as sample preparation and analysis within a specified time-frame and to the satisfaction of the client. -
Laboratory DemonstratorPlymouth University Oct 2009 - Mar 2013Plymouth, United KingdomI demonstrated in stage 1 and stage 2 organic chemistry laboratory practicals. My responsibilities included assessment of pre-laboratory exercises, student feedback, demonstrating apparatus, signing off students at the end of practicals and marking students work. -
Research AssistantPlymouth University May 2009 - Aug 2009Plymouth, United KingdomDuring the summer between my undergraduate degree and PhD I worked full time as a research assistant for Professor Simon Belt of the Petroleum and Environmental Geochemistry Group (PEGG), Plymouth University. My responsibilities included extracting, analysing and interpreting the data from a marine sediment core from the Arctic, which resulted in a publication.
