Hello! My name is Hazel Anagu, B.S. I am a recent graduate of California State University at San Marcos. In my current role as a laboratory assistant at the University of California Berkeley in Dr. Michiko Taga’s lab, we use corrinoids as model nutrients for understanding microbial interactions. I am seeking to understand the interactions between corrinoid-producing and corrinoid-dependent bacteria in soil microbiomes. My desire to make a positive impact on my community leads me to pursue a career in microbiological and biomedical research. In my time at California State University San Marcos pursuing my bachelor’s I discovered a profound interest in research which has encouraged me in pursuing a PhD in immunology with a focus on human-microbe interactions. As a first-generation American I am proud that many of my experiences, including my time as a Biocom Life Science Young Leader and doing research in Dr. Kambiz Hamadani’s lab, allowed me to extend my idea of community. Being raised in a Nigerian, Christian household where community is encouraged, these opportunities showed me how biochemical research continues to keep me close to my roots and allows me to help others with my work.
