About Hazel Behling
I am currently a health equity coordinator with the UW Madison Department of Family Medicine and Community Health. I work on social determinants of health with a focus on community building and community voice. My goal in this role is to intentionally listen, learn from, and develop sustainable relationships with community members and organizations in rural communities. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin Madison with a double major in Legal Studies and Political Science and a triple minor in Environmental Studies Gender and Women’s Studies and Criminal Justice. I am a co-founder of Cultivative Coalition of the Chippewa Valley which works with marginalized youth in Northern WI to create equitable and inclusive education and communities. I was previously the campaign manager for the incumbent State Rep. Jodi Emerson in the November 2020 election. Furthermore, I worked as a Social Justice Education Facilitation intern at the Office of Inclusion Education for UW-Madison and consulted with Racine County Juvenile Detention Center where I created a 115 page policy brief aimed at alleviating disparities and mistreatment in the juvenile justice system.

This has helped to show the district’s inadequate response to victims of discrimination, abuse, and relationship/sexual violence•Advocated for Implicit Bias Training, Inclusive Pedagogy Training, Critical Intervention Training, Training related to ACEs and De-escalation Training which resulted in mandatory training for all staff and employees along with a mentoring program for BIPOC students •Took part in the process of reviewing the school curriculum and adding diverse voices and the history of marginalized groups to the curriculum •Updated the school handbook/website to include transparent disciplinary actions following acts of racism/homophobia/sexism/transphobia as well as acts of relationship or sexual violence for both students and staff.•Spoke at the ACLU Smart Justice Townhall on how individuals can take back their power from institutions that show little interest in protecting the welfare of underrepresented students and individuals. •Implemented the use of the Speak Up app so students can report any concerns using the app. This will ensure that concerns are documented given previous reports of discrimination against LGBTQ+ and BIPOC students and reports of relationship/sexual violence had been lost.
