Profile bio

About Hazel Gibson

I'm a science communication professional with over 15 years of experience working in public science communication in museums, parks, online and in research institutions. I first started out working in geotechnical engineering geology but soon followed my passion for volcanology and risk communication into the field at Mt St Helens in the USA. This opened a whole new career to me that I had never considered - and I never looked back! With a PhD in Geoscience Cognition and Communication I expanded my experience, working for Europe's biggest geoscience organisation, the non-profit open access European Geosciences Union (EGU), eventually running all the Union's communications, both internal and external. I got a LOT of experience at crisis communications, and digital events whilst helping our members during the global COVID pandemic. As always, my first love is geoscience, and the discussions that scientists, media and the public can have to help us work together to find solutions for the biggest issues we face today.

Phd Research Student

Plymouth, United Kingdom

During my PhD I researched what people think about the geological subsurface - what's beneath our feet - using a psychological approach called 'mental models'. This approach is commonly used in risk assessment (especially of geological hazards such as volcanoes), but I am applying it in a non-critical situation (to assess perceptions where there is no 'life or death' element). My role involves:♦ literature review♦ design of research plan♦ project management♦ interviewing… Show more During my PhD I researched what people think about the geological subsurface - what's beneath our feet - using a psychological approach called 'mental models'.
