During my PhD I researched what people think about the geological subsurface - what's beneath our feet - using a psychological approach called 'mental models'. In this role I was responsible for all Earth Science related enquires received by the Natural History Museum. I co-ordinated receipt of enquires by email, telephone, post and through a drop-in service provided. I provided identifications and detailed information for a variety of objects (rocks, minerals and fossils) and pseudofossils (things that look like they should be a fossil, but aren't). This also included a responsibility for posting in an online forum in response to queries. I also wrote factsheets and guides for the general public about Museum discoveries.I co-ordinated with the research staff in the Palaeontology, Mineralogy and Zoology departments, to facilitate identification of objects that were beyond my experience. I organized and promoted Museum wide events, most notably ‘Meteorites Day 2012’, a day-long event that I organised, which was attended by hundreds of visitors. Show less

Whilst I was a volunteer Ranger at Mt St Helens, I interpreted geological and ecological features of the volcano for the public, schools and staff at the Johnston Ridge Observatory and was an on-site geologist. My responsiilities included maintaining and interpreting seismological equipment and the curation of geological specimens.
