Clinical Risk ManagerKingston Nhs Healthcare Trust Jan 2001 - Jan 2003Kingston Upon Thames, United KingdomThis Senior Management role required persuasive powers to encourage Consultants and other disciplines to appreciate the benefits of risk management and address poor performance in areas of hazard management and prevention. In the process of designing an implementation plan for proactive risk management in the Unit I had to negotiate change with managers and staff which required excellent leadership skills, communication, negotiation, empathy (and tenacity). My skills enabled me to build good working relationships with the decision makers inside the Trust and with the outside enforcement agencies and other regulators.Sound decision-making was naturally required when investigating incidents and presenting the findings them to the Board and to the relatives. I also assisted the Coroner by reporting and giving evidence of the outcomes of my investigations. This post taught me how challenging it can be to bring about change in large organisations, how important strong management skills and leadership are and how to communicate with and engage with key stakeholders and decisions makers in a positive, empathetic way

Tefla TeacherBritish Council, Beirut, Lebanon Jan 1996 - Jan 2000Beirut, LebanonDuring my stay in Beirut I taught English at all levels at the British Council. I also carried out innovative work with trainee teachers at a private school. These teachers had consistently failed a module of their professional qualification and I was asked to review the teaching method of this module with a view to them gaining their professional qualification. I completely redesigned the material and the method of delivery, which resulted in all of the teachers gaining their qualification. Working in a different countries’ culture gave me further insight, empathy and experience to appreciate the diverse workforce in most organisations today and prepared me to effectively work in different organisations’ cultures.I designed many original methods to delivery my training and tailor it to my audience, their level of language attainment, age and preferences and often used role-play and interactive practice. I have transferred aspects of this experience to my coaching workshops, as I am very aware of the need to change pace and provide variety for my attendees. This role enabled me to further my communication, leadership, influencing and management skills and again I benefitted from the experience of living and working in a different culture.

Nurse Manager / Matron / Nursing SisterNepal, S. Africa, Saudi Arabia, Australia, London, Wales Jan 1988 - Jan 1991Various Countries WorldwideI practiced in the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Nepal and Australia. My specialties were the highly intensive fields of neurosurgery and cardiac surgery requiring rapid decision-making, problem solving, quick thinking and a maintaining control in highly charged situations. Nursing gave me the opportunity to develop my confidence and other interpersonal skills contributing to emotional intelligence, such as communication skills and an ability to quickly build rapport and establish relationships. This was essential for successful interactions with patients, relatives and colleagues especially working in countries where English was not the first language and standards and behaviours were often very different. I also learned to appreciate the differing ways people communicate in various cultural groups, which was especially important when dealing with clients under extreme stress. I swiftly progressed to Nurse Management giving me first hand experience of how important it is that sound managerial skills are developed as early as possible. The significance and diversity of these skills in practice became apparent to me; skills, such as conflict management, empathy, leadership, engaging staff and ensuring team performance to achieve positive outcomes for clients. The nursing profession also made me realise how incredible people are. It demonstrated how differently people communicate and react to situations and it led to my life long passion of the study of people, their attitudes and behaviours.

Independent TravelSabbatical From Career To Travel Around The World Aug 1987 - Jan 1989India, Nepal, Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, AmericaThis was a very valuable experience giving me clearer insight into different cultures and peoples. Much of my travel was remote and, as I was alone, it was necessary for me to learn how to communicate, often without language, and get what I needed quickly in many different situations. Whilst most of my time was spent fulfilling my own wishes to see certain countries, I also did some ad hoc voluntary work on the way including a clinic in India and a hospital in China. I exceeded my expectation in the number of countries I visited and I am very proud of this as it challenged my personal resources, my communication skills, my resilience and my patience but it was very worth it and really was the experience of a lifetime.
