As my PhD draws to a close, I am very pleased to have been invited to undertake two research roles within the School of Education: qualitative data collection and analysis for Athena Swan; and a systematic literature review and interviews to further establish the application of the Graduate Capital Model.

I am a final year PGR, studying the employability experiences of first-in-family students. Underpinning my research is a drive to find out why students from lower socio-economic backgrounds experience poorer degree and graduate outcomes than their more advantaged counterparts. My philosophical stance is pragmatism and as part of my research I am writing a substantial piece about how universities can better support their students. My research utilises mixed methods and to date, I have: *Researched government policies towards widening participation and employability and the retention and progression of first-in-family students.*Liaised with academic and student services’ gatekeepers to ensure their support of the project.*Undertaken a published systematic review.*Designed and conducted semi-structured interviews with student participants.*Employed NVIVO for the thematic coding of interviews.*Designed a scale and distributed its contents via Qualtrics.*Utilised SPSS to analyse survey data from over 380 respondents.*Shared findings via research papers, conferences and poster showcases (Awarded Doctoral Research Poster Showcase 2022 Runner Up).*Been presented with an Award for Impact (2022) via the ESRC SCDTP.Whilst undertaking my PhD I have had additional research roles including assessing GCM Impact nationally and internationally and qualitative analysis for an Athena Swan application.

Working in partnership with academic and Student Services colleagues, I coordinated university-wide projects to support the career development of students and graduates.• Developed and oversaw the validation of a psychometric scale - the Career Readiness Test.• Evaluated careers provision across the university via an appreciative enquiry and made formal recommendations for service improvements. • Co-created and launched the Employability Exchange, a website for academic colleagues who were interested in best practice in employability development for their students.• Planned, organised and presented at university-wide events to encourage academic colleagues to learn about and engage with best practice in employability.• Set up and managed a team of Student Careers Ambassadors to enhance outreach activities for hard to reach groups.• Led the careers service awards strategy to raise internal and external service profile.• Maintained the career services’ action plan and KPI documentation, formally reporting this to board as necessary.• Organised and minuted the Employability Programme Board, a university wide strategic body which reported directly into the VC’s office.• Invited to sit on university-wide assessment and degree design working groups.

Since qualifying as a Careers Adviser in 1991, I have worked and led teams in schools, further education, higher education and adult work. Having completed a Masters Degree in careers, I was invited to join Reading University as an Associate Lecturer where I taught on the QCG and AGCAS courses. I have also run my own business in the South delivering high quality, bespoke IAG training courses, as well as consultancy, mentoring and research for local universities, connexions and nextstep.Since 2005, I have delivered training in the following areas:· Guidance skills (introductory and advanced)· Advice skills (introductory and advanced)· Training the Trainer· Professional Presentations· Tools of the Trade· Short Interventions· Change Management· Theories of Careers Choice and Change· Dealing with redundancyIn addition to training, I have led and participated in research projects. Clients include the DCSF, the University of Portsmouth and the Centre for Real World Learning at the University of Winchester. Topics have been diverse, but have included PDP, creative learning and auditing IAG provision generally. I am always happy to develop and deliver research briefs, as well as undertaking specific tasks such as running focus groups or undertaking literature reviews. Clearly there is a strong link between my research and training, with each informing the other. I pride myself on my ability to make the toughest of subjects come to life.
