Heather Blackwell Email and Phone Number
I am currently a Biomedical Engineering doctoral student at the University of Florida who is passionate about developing new strategies to improve biomanufacturing and new cellular therapies. In 2022, I obtained my MSc in BME from the UF following my own battle with a rare leukemia requiring a life-saving stem cell transplant. My research is focused on improving cellular therapies for blood cancer patients by leveraging engineering techniques to develop novel approaches to isolate and increase blood stem cells required for stem cell transplants. I have a diverse research portfolio having developed a high throughput magnetic isolation system, magnetic nanoparticles, and ex vivo expansion platforms for cellular products using human derived biologics. Additionally, I have worked with different biomaterials and bioreactor systems to enhance and streamline the biomanufacturing process. My research efforts have been recognized with awards by local and national societies including AABB and BMES. Driven by the need to improve outcomes for stem cell transplant patients I am committed to developing innovative solutions impacting safe, efficient, and quality treatment. As a licensed and ASCP credentialed Medical Laboratory Scientist, I have experience in blood banking, immunohematology, molecular biology, and cellular therapies. My working knowledge of FACT, FDA, CLIA, and AABB standards and practices in the clinical, cellular and cGMP laboratory settings have led to authorships within the field establishing new clinical practices. Drawing from previous leadership and training roles I have worked to develop new educational materials for trainees in TCT. The experience from those leadership positions have allowed me to successfully set up, manage, and maintain laboratory facilities both in the translational and clinical environment. My dedication to improve outcomes for patients doesn’t end at the bench. As a patient advocate for the NMDP and LLS, I advocate for individuals requiring stem cell transplants and promote the enrollment of new donors for the NMDP registry. Additionally, as a member of ASTCT ACCESS committee we are working to provide equitable access to treatments for marginalized and disadvantaged patients. I enjoy engaging with members of the community sharing my experiences and raising the awareness of the importance of TCT. My unique experiences as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Researcher, and Biomedical Engineer make me distinctively qualified to approach the challenges facing the growing field of stem cell transplant and cellular therapies.
