Postdoctoral Fellow
I worked in the lab of Prof. David Jackson, as part of an NSF-funded project studying genetic mechanisms determining maize inflorescence architecture and perturbations to these mechanisms by early season drought. I was concretely focusing on the following projects:- Mapping and validating natural modifiers of the classical maize inflorescence mutants fasciated ear2 and ramosa3- Mapping and studying EMS-induced enhancers of ramosa3- Studying the role of trehalose-6-phosphate signaling in early ear development using CRISPR/Cas9 to mutate genes involved in trehalose biosynthesis- Using transcriptomics to understand how early drought inhibits inflorescence development (funded through an individual EMBO Long Term Fellowship)
Phd Student
During my PhD research in the lab of Prof. Dirk Inzé at Ghent University/VIB, funded through an individual 'aspirant' grant from FWO, I was studying the effects of mild osmotic stress and mild drought on early leaf development in Arabidopsis thaliana as a model to understand how abiotic stress affects plant growth. I was part of a small research team that uses a wide array of phenotyping and molecular biology tools to study the effects of mild stress at the organ, cellular and molecular level, using time courses to study dynamic responses following stress onset. This led to the discovery of a dynamic pathway involving the hormones gibberellin and ethylene which first reversibly pause and later irreversibly arrest cell proliferation, and prematurely push cells into differentiation, leading to smaller leaves under mild stress conditions.
