About Hear Project

Through the HEAR project, American Institutes for Research (AIR), along with its partners, Church World Service (CWS) and the Muslim Community Center Medical Clinic (MCC-Medical Clinic), is applying innovative qualitative research and capacity-building approaches to facilitate collaboration among diverse organizations to improve the health and well-being of Afghan refugees. We have conducted qualitative research to understand the resettlement landscape, challenges and opportunities for both Afghan refugees, and the organizations helping to address their immediate and longer-term needs. We are also conducting an ethnography study of the lived experiences of eight Afghan refugees. Informed by this research, we are developing the HEAR Learning Network, a community of 10 organizations - including resettlement agencies, community-based organizations, and health agencies - that are supporting Afghan refugees as they resettle and integration in the Washington, D.C/Maryland/Virginia (DMV) area. Network members are working toward a shared goal to establish long-lasting connections and align their efforts to improve the health and wellbeing of Afghan refugees. The insights from the HEAR project will be shared with network members, and other organizations supporting refugee resettlement and integration, to help inform their work, strengthen collaboration amongst them, and communicate the priorities and concerns of the Afghan refugees they serve.
