I was brought into Dr. Sharkey's biochemistry lab at the beginning of the summer as a recipient of the Plant Genomics REU. I worked under the direction of Dr. Dennis Gray, one of two post doctorates in the lab. During these 10 weeks my goal was to discover novel isoprene synthase genes in different species of trees and reeds. I extracted RNA, performed reverse transcription, amplified potential isoprene synthase genes (this step required a significant amount of trouble shooting and learning about primer design), cloned the potential genes into E. coli, and then expressed the genes and tested for the emission of isoprene. I was asked to stay for the rest of the summer to continue this research. By the end of the summer we had discovered six novel isoprene synthase genes.
