I was selected for the Social Entrepreneurship Maymester course in Beijing, China. During my time, I enrolled within the History of Social Entrepreneurship course led by Dr. Leonard Moore and Dr. Charles Lu. In this class, I observed how innovative businesses in China and the United States use unique approaches to address poverty, environmental concerns, migrant education, caring for an aging population, urban unemployment, health care, orphan child welfare, womens’ rights, incarceration and other issues. In addition to classroom learning, I participated in an engaged learning activity with the Dandelion School, a middle school in Beijing that serves the city's large and expanding migrant population. By volunteering at the school, I gained first-hand knowledge of how one venture is attempting to address one of China's greatest social problems: migrant education. During my time at the Dandelion School I taught English to twenty Chinese middle school students, coordinated curriculum with my fellows in the program and made an educational video to demonstrate simple tasks explained in English.
