Formally known as Westmead Millennium Institute I was responsible for driving my own research project to investigate the role of plasmacytoid dendritic cells in herpes simplex virus infection, the altered maturation status of dendritic cells following viral stimulation and infection and the effect this may have in generating an immune response when an individual is co-infected with HIV and herpes simplex. I planned, performed, analysed and wrote up my results for publication as well as for less formal lab meetings. Key technologies that I used regularly were Flow cytometry, confocal and deltavision microscopy, quantative PCR, Tissue culture, Containment level 3 techniques and herpes virus propagation.As a group leader I was jointly responsible for the supervision and guidance of a small group of junior post-docs and students. In particular I was associate supervisor to 2 PhD students and was their main point of call for academic direction, experimental planning and presentation preparation. I was responsible for managing the research grant budget and ensuring appropriate training was given to the students as well as reminding them of their health and safety responsibilities.
