I think if I hadn’,t joined the British Army at 18 , I would not be the successful, ambitious person I am today. After leaving the forces I went back to work for our family builders merchant business. When I arrived back from Cyprus in 1994 things weren’t great in our family business, cash flow, old equipment, IT in fact not much had progressed.The first thing I attended too was major cost cutting by implementing a central buying policy which in turn reduced costs and stock levels and increased sales margins. Next our extremely aged phone and it systems desperately required replacing but cash flow wasn’t great. I arranged finance to cover both and personally managed the install and staff training programs. Next was the vehicles and machinery all needed replacing so I also financed these.Technology had passed us by so I built their first shop online website and email accounts.One of the final roles I created and took on was the head buyer again negotiating rebates, supplier management and stock levels.I also put the company forward and was their representative at the buying society, negotiated rebates in excess of a million.Through all this and various other roles I have gained a vast amount of commercial experience.I am currently senior buyer at a steel merchant and managing three other buyers.
