Thesis Title: Jointly Estimating 3D Target Shape and Motion from Radar DataAdvisor: Margaret CheneyThesis expands on research done as a summer intern at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, 2010 & 2011, under the supervision of Joseph Mayhan. Devised a novel hybrid 3D radar imaging technique that jointly estimates target shape and motion using three radar observables: range, range-rate, and phase. Builds on and combines the work of two papers: Phase-Enhanced 3D Snapshot ISAR Imaging and Interferometric SAR (Joseph Mayhan, MITLL) and Shape and Motion Reconstruction from 3D-to-1D Orthographically Projected Data via Object-Image Relations (Matthew Ferrara, AFRL). Developed two algorithms that eliminate the need for scatterer correlation (also known as data association) so that the hybrid method can be used on uncorrelated (unassociated) radar data. These algorithms can be applied to any radar data in general. Proved a theorem relating scatterer correlation to data matrix rank that justifies the use of the scatterer correlation algorithm.

Summer Intern

Group 36: Ballistic Missile Defense System IntegrationSummer 2011: Devised a novel hybrid 3D radar imaging technique that jointly estimates target shape and motion using range, range-rate, and phase information. Focused on eventually minimizing the need for scatterer correlation.Winter 2010-11: Participated and submitted an algorithm for the Division 3 X-Prize competition, built a target classifier that distinguishes between many target shapes when only a small sector of range-only data is given. Created a target database of sector “images” based on training data. Distinguished targets by comparing the mean and covariance of three data characteristics using a 3D joint Gaussian probability density function.Summer 2010: Developed performance measure tools for evaluating RCS signature models from sensor measurement data. Implemented phase-enhanced 3D snapshot imaging algorithm in order to analyze and make 3D images of simulated and static range data; developed a novel technique to resolve phase ambiguities in static range data.Group 34: Intelligence, Test, & EvaluationWinter 2009-10: Created and analyzed target models using the Augmented Point Scatterer Model (APSM). Focused on compensating for delayed returns due to multipath scattering.Summer 2009: Simulated pulse compression for LFM waveforms via cross-correlation matched filtering and Fourier processing, analyzed phase behavior.
