About Heather Gring
In early 2024, I joined the staff of the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library as Rare Book Curator. From 2013-2024, I was employed as the Archivist at the Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo, New York. In addition to conducting traditional archival projects, I worked on the Center's Arts Legacy Project, which focuses on increasing the documentation of, and access to, the artistic legacy of Western New York. I managed the Living Legacy Project, conducting oral history projects with living artists in the region and then made dynamic profiles about their careers on the Center's website. In 2013, I graduated from the University of British Columbia with a dual Masters in Archival Studies and a Masters in Library and Information Science. While at UBC, I had opportunities to curate permanent and temporary exhibitions at Rare Books and Special Collections at UBC. In my other position as an Archival Assistant at the Museum of Anthropology's Harry and Audrey Hawthorn Library and Archives, I arranged and described textual and born-digital records. In 2008 I graduated from Buffalo State College with honors with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History with a minor concentration in Museum Studies. My goal is to focus on working in a museum, library, or archival institution. I have a special interest in historic preservation, especially in communities with so many stunning structures like Buffalo, NY. Archivist
My role as Archivist at the Burchfield Penney Art Center was quite multifaceted: I care for archival collections of notable WNY artists and arts organizations, as well over 5,000 files on WNY artists--with more being added every day! I am still active with the Living Legacy project, and have conducted oral history interviews with nearly 100 artists in the past nine years. My greatest achievement has been processing the archive for Artpark--resulting in 210 boxes of records and a 400 page finding aid! In my day to day, I care not only for the Burchfield Penney's institutional past but for the present--I've taken on active records management of physical and born digital records. I am active with the development of our CMS as well, to ensure that it meets our needs at the museum. As part of the Curatorial department, I curate and install exhibitions and also manage a lively internship program in the Archives.
