In 2011, after graduating university, I left Canada to do some traveling. I was eager to see the world but, needed some funds to do so. I stumbled myself into a small TEFL Certification school in Florence, Italy and got to work. After receiving my certificate, I took my first contract in northern Pakistan working with a not-for-profit school in a small village wedged in between the most beautiful mountains I'd ever seen.Later, I carried my crumpled certificate and backpack to Nablus, Palestine where I worked for another not-for-profit school, before shifting again to Iraqi Kurdistan for another teaching position. Somehow, the years have flown by and I have been so privileged to teach in so many incredible communities. It was around in the middle of this journey that I upgraded my TEFL Certificate to a Masters of Education and really leaned into this teaching thing. It has brought me innumerable joys, heartbreaks, opportunities and life lessons.One thing that has always stuck out to me on this journey, unfortunately, is how exploitive the education industry is of learners' dreams and goals. Life has connected me with so many incredibly talented and committed young people who are working hard to reach their English fluency goals but face roadblocks in accessibility, affordability and approach.I've finally unpacked my backpack and am done roaming. I have settled in Ramallah, Palestine - the place that always felt closest to home in my heart - and opened my own English support program, REAP Education. We partner with schools in the UAE, Iraq and Palestine to provide online individualized, student-centered English support to learners. My mission - REAP Education's mission - is to give learners access to personalized feedback and support on their English proficiency journeys. We are an alternative to expensive, inaccessible private tutoring channels and believe language is best learnt through supportive, empowering and individual experiences.
