  • Canadian Students For Sensible Drug Policy - Thunder Bay Region (Cssdp-Tbr)
    Chair, Member
Canadian Students For Sensible Drug Policy - Thunder Bay Region (Cssdp-Tbr) Oct 2011 - May 2015
    Thunder Bay
Part of my MSW placement with the Thunder Bay Drug Strategy (TBDS) (supervised by Patty Hajdu) involved starting up a chapter of CSSDP in Thunder Bay. This was Patty's had learned about CSSDP and their work a few years earlier through her role as coordinator of the TBDS, so she invited their ED, Caleb Chepesiuk, to the first Pot, Pills & Parties conference which was hosted by the TBDS in the Fall of 2011 to deliver a presentation about this national youth drug policy organization. Conference attendees interested in being part creating a local CSSDP chapter in Thunder Bay were invited to gather at the end of the day's activities. This core group of interested students and youth (supported by Patty and TBDS) continued to hold meetings over the following months focusing on advertizing, developing the chapter's structure/focus/values and recruiting additional members. In March 2012 the 4 members were able to attend the national CSSDP conference, Progress Not Prisons at the University of Calgary where Kalinda Hardy and I delivered a presentation entitled "Partnering with Dealers, Runners, Friends & Grannies as Allies in Harm Reduction" based on an idea we had come up while going on IV drug use outreach which I had subsequently been researching as part of my the MSW degree I was completing at that time. In the spring of 2012 our CSSDP chapter (supported by TBDS) hosted an interim Pot, Pills & Parties event called the Spring Session which featured (among many) the presentation, "What's up with the Omnibus Crime Bill C-10" by me and Reena Legarde (Attached). This presentation was repeated in October 2012 at the "Pot, Pills & Parties: Rights, Healing and Wellness" conference presented by the Fort William First Nation Healing Strategy in partnership with CSSDP-TBR at the FWFN Community Centre.
