About Heather Millette
I wanted to be an architect. I was accepted into the NC State School of Architecture but changed my mind the spring of my senior year. My mother suggested we look at schools that offered design since I had been making clothes for myself since the summer going into the 4th grade, when my friend’s mother taught us both to sew because she didn't know what to do with us! I knew once I had taken my first flat pattern class that I had found my passion, which has turned into a wonderful career. And in a way it is architecture, just with fabrics. I can honestly say that I love what I do. I look forward to going to work every day and seeing what awaits me. One of my most favorite things to do is to make patterns. When I started my career, CAD systems were not found in every business, but once I found that I could be super precise, down to the millimeter, there was no going back to oaktag, pencils, rulers and curves on a table. I picked up grading early in my career and find it an extremely useful skill to have to put the finishing touches on a pattern and ensure that all sizes fit as well as the base size does. Plus size patterns and grading are a new passion for me; to be able to offer good fitting, flattering and stylish garments to this long ignored consumer is very rewarding for me. I really enjoying analyzing body data, turning these measurements into X & Y coordinates and seeing the magic happen when the pattern is graded out on the screen into colorful sizes.I enjoy working with factories in figuring out efficient ways to construct garments and adjusting patterns as such for production. Back in my youth while sewing my wardrobe for school, I would skim the instructions only to toss them aside, assembling the pieces in what I thought was an easier, quicker way. I also like the challenge of manipulating patterns to achieve a more efficient fabric yield without losing the integrity of the design.I also love a good project – whether it is updating an old or creating a new process manual or completely overhauling a SOP - I get great satisfaction in the finished product and seeing it being used by colleagues around the world. I carve out time in my work week so that I can add in projects to do, helping our department run more efficiently and communicate ideas and processes cross-functionally. Finally, as a senior patternmaker, I am in the position of being able to guide junior pattern makers, sharing my experiences through collaborations and individual trainings with them, helping them on their path to become experienced patternmakers as well.
