Molecular NeuropharmacologyThis lab investigates the role of polyunsaturated fatty acids in neuronal functional and neuropsychiatric disorders, and drugs and diseases affecting the CNS dopamine systems. Major research focus was on the role of brain polyunsaturated fatty acid composition in postpartum depression and traumatic brain injury. Additional research included the D3 dopamine receptor as a therapeutic target for schizophrenia, drug addiction, and Parkinson's disease; and mechanisms underlying sensitization to psychostimulants.Molecular and Integrative PhysiologyThis research is focused on diseases and conditions that affect motor function, such as Parkinson's disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), and aging. This lab uses operant behavioral methods in rodent models and investigated mechanisms that underlie, and potential treatments to ameliorate, age-related orolingual motor deficits.

The long-term goal of the Molecular Neuropharmacology Section is the characterization of neurotransmitter receptor-mediated information transduction, and its regulation, across neuronal membranes. The primary model systems under investigation are those neurotransmitter receptors that are linked to their signal transduction pathways via guanine nucleotide binding regulatory (G) proteins with specific emphasis on dopamine receptor subtypes.
