As I entered law school in 1998, I knew that I wanted to be a prosecutor, in a courtroom and talking to juries. I went after that with vigor, completing five jury trials even before I graduated from law school. My first job was in the State Attorney’s Office in Clearwater, Florida. It was one the best experiences in my career. Even though I was dealing with misdemeanor crimes, I knew was making a difference. I learned about human behavior and how to communicate with strangers on a jury and persuade them with evidence and compelling argument. I learned to communicate with Judges, persuade them (sometimes) with compelling legal arguments and when to stop arguing and listen. After leaving the State Attorney’s Office, I worked in private practice, a large medical malpractice defense firm and I also taught at the local law school. I finally decided to start my own firm and I decided to focus on family law. As the firm grew and I helped more people, I began to recognize patterns and commonalities in the way women went through a divorce. I recognized the patterns that I had witnessed in my own mother’s divorce and remembered encouraging her to stand up for herself and value her contribution to the marriage. I had a realization that my purpose was to advocate for women and that because of my personal experiences, my education and training, I could change the experience of for women going through divorce. It has been amazing to watch women transform as we help them navigate their divorce. Whether they are the breadwinner and trying to protect what they have worked so hard for as well as their children, or the supportive stay at home wife who has been in the background propelling her husband’s success, our firm is the one that understands these women and how to be successful. It is a rewarding journey building Florida Women’s Law Group and I look forward to all the future holds and our ability to continue to help women with their legal issues.
