I have also had the privilege of watching Heather work – of learning from her – through other professional collaborations in recent years. In 2010 we co-chaired “Women, Political Engagement, and the Artistic Imagination,” a double-panel at the annual National Women’s Studies Association Conference in Denver; our diverse panel drew a standing-room-only crowd and led to lengthy productive conversations. On three other occasions, I invited Heather to organize social justice-oriented writing workshops for students at Wheaton College. Twice she led workshops on “How to Write an Op-Ed” where she taught students how to think more expansively about what they know, how to make credible arguments about issues they care about, and how to pitch an op-ed. Her third workshop, “Writing for Change: Feminism and Media,” taught students how to write for social change on topics that matter them. In each case, Heather easily and effectively communicated and engaged with diverse groups of students. My colleagues and I were deeply impressed with her ability to combine intellectual rigor with compassion and care. And our students loved her. Heather also served as an external reviewer for the Women’s & Gender Studies Program at Wheaton College. In that context, she expertly worked across campus divisions, departments, and programs to advise faculty and administrators on ways to effectively strengthen our academic and co-curricular programming. Heather is a consummate professional who always centers questions of equity and justice in her work. I would happily collaborate with Heather on any professional endeavor in the future."
