Business Strategy Consultant | Author Of "Within Reach"Freelance Jan 2014 - Sep 2024Winnipeg, Manitoba, CanadaI help small businesses and organizations to create customized, actionable strategies for change and growth (ex. improve productivity, increase profitability). I rely on collaboration and open communication with team members to build easy-to-follow action plans that deliver the best possible results. Most recent projects include:* Online retail business – reduced 2023 operating expenses by 29% (despite sales being down by 20%), putting the business in a position to become profitable in 2024. This allowed the owner to invest the money she saved into new ideas for growth. Built detailed action plans for each new idea so the owner would have all the information she needed to move forward when the time was right.* Non-profit organization – captured all projects under specific work plan categories for funding purposes, giving a clear overview of related projects and where resources could be consolidated to reduce spending. Facilitated a two-day planning session to build detailed plans for four projects. Led two projects that did not have a project lead and were falling behind, to get them on track for completion before fiscal year-end.* REALTOR® – achieved his best year in real estate with a 20% increase in sales income over the previous year. Set a minimum sales goal, mapped out a rebranding strategy, switched to a new client contact management system, sourced new advertising opportunities. * Renovation company – worked closely with the General Manager to evaluate work practices and identify gaps. Researched project tracking systems and adapted one to meet the company’s needs. This provided a clearer picture of the company’s financial situation, helping them to make better strategic decisions.* Developed content for a workshop where 20 participants practiced setting SMART goals and breaking down tasks into a 90-day action plan. Ran a focus group to evaluate workshop components and identify areas for improvement.

OwnerDesigned By Inspiration Jun 2007 - Dec 2014Winnipeg, Manitoba, CanadaI have wanted to run my own business ever since I took a “Start Your Own Business” course in high school, so I decided to start this side hustle. Using my own photography and original motivational quotes, I designed a line of unique, inspirational greeting cards and customized keepsakes. I sold my greeting cards at craft shows on the weekends while I was in university, then moved sales online after I graduated. This was meant to be a creative outlet to provide some stress relief from university. It gave me an introduction to the basics of running a business and it was an opportunity to figure out if being self-employed was really something I wanted to pursue further. It turns out that I loved it! It was a fun experience that made me a little bit of extra spending money.

Administrative Support ClerkRoyal Canadian Mounted Police Feb 2011 - Apr 2012Dauphin, Manitoba, CanadaAs I continued to pursue a career as a first responder, I narrowed down my focus to becoming a police officer. With my degree in Criminology, and my experience working with the Downtown Watch and Main Street Project, this seemed like the logical choice. Having grown up in a small town, I liked the idea of moving back to a rural community as a Mountie. I wanted some experience inside the Force before applying to be a police officer, so this position got my foot in the door.I completed a rigorous application process before being hired for this new part-time position – Administrative Support Clerk for the Major Crime Unit, Forensic Identification Unit and Police Dog Service. The RCMP decided not to extend this position to full-time and I had come to the realization that being a police officer was not for me, so I made the difficult decision to leave the Force after a year.* Transcribed audio and video files for use in investigations and court documents.* Provided file management, procurement of office supplies and other administrative support as required.* Picked up additional work from other departments (i.e. transcription for Traffic Services) as I became more comfortable with the duties and routines of my administrative position. Took a four-month, part-time term position in a neighbouring detachment to gain more experience from a different perspective. -
Crisis Worker And Alternate Shift CoordinatorMain Street Project Apr 2009 - Jan 2011Winnipeg, Manitoba, CanadaMy previous experience with the Downtown Watch prompted me to do more to serve the homeless and marginalized members of the community. With the conflict management skills that I developed patrolling the streets, and my Emergency Medical Responder training, this was my next step towards a career as a first responder. It also gave me insight into the field of addictions, mental health and harm reduction. The time I spent working at Main Street Project is unforgettable and continues to have the most impact throughout the rest of my life. Not only was the work deeply meaningful, I also had the opportunity to collaborate with my coworkers as we improvised creative strategies to defuse crisis situations. As a team, we may not have always seen eye-to-eye, but we all had one goal – to ensure the well-being of our clients.* Monitored the mental and physical condition of clients in the Intoxicated Persons Detention Area. Trained by Winnipeg Police Service to do a body search on female clients if no female officer was available. Determined when detained clients were sober enough to be safely released. * Supervised approximately 70 clients who stayed in the emergency shelter each night. Used discretion when permitting clients to enter, based on their level of sobriety or distress, and therefore their potential to disrupt others. Watched for alcohol and/or drug use that could pose a danger to other clients or staff. Calmly attended to disruptive clients to understand their needs – sometimes all they needed was someone to listen.* Coordinated the evening shift of seven staff members, filling in when the full-time supervisor was unavailable. Delegated tasks as required, prepared staff scheduling and compiled shift status reports for management.

Downtown Watch AmbassadorDowntown Winnipeg Biz Apr 2008 - Aug 2008Winnipeg, Manitoba, CanadaI was offered this summer job since I was already involved with the Downtown Watch as a volunteer. Working with the Downtown Watch was my introduction to community safety and the complexities of homelessness. I grew up in a small town where I was sheltered from hardships such as homelessness, so my experience as an Ambassador was eye opening. It wasn’t until I spent time patrolling downtown that I was exposed to the harsh reality of life on the streets.* Patrolled the downtown area, in partnership with emergency services (Winnipeg Police Service and Fire Paramedic Service), assisting with non-emergency response, outreach and intervention to members of Winnipeg’s downtown community.* Learned how to quickly assess and defuse crisis situations using appropriate, non-violent, conflict resolution techniques. Sometimes responded to calls where individuals required medical attention. Took initiative to train as an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) to provide better assessment and assistance on scene. (The EMR training would later be a requirement for my next job at Main Street Project.)* Provided a welcoming, friendly presence – offering information and SafeWalks to individuals, checking in with businesses to ensure the safety of staff and property.* Did wellness checks for community members living on the street to provide them with a sense of connection – sometimes just a friendly hello was all they needed to make their day. -
Assistant To The Director Of Medevac ServicesPerimeter Aviation Apr 2006 - Jun 2007Winnipeg, Manitoba, CanadaThe most memorable part of this job was travelling to First Nations reserves in Northern Manitoba, many of which are only accessible by plane or winter road. My visits to these communities were focused on strengthening relationships with the nursing stations to improve patient transfers on Perimeter Medevac planes.* Acted as an alternate Medevac dispatcher / flight follower on occasion, filling in when the full-time staff were unavailable:- Took calls from hospitals and nursing stations to coordinate patient transportation between healthcare facilities.- Contacted active flight crew from one of Perimeter’s five Medevac bases – closest to patient’s location – that could complete the patient transfer within pilots’ flight time limitations.- Checked in with flight crews before takeoff and after landing to communicate any potential time delays to healthcare facilities and ensure patient transfers went smoothly.* Handled administrative tasks, such as managing accounts payable/receivable, billing and verifying invoices, monthly inventory of medical supplies, and procurement of office supplies. Streamlined my process to accurately complete these tasks, which made time to take on additional work from other departments. -
Reservations AgentPerimeter Aviation Jan 2006 - Mar 2006Winnipeg, Manitoba, CanadaWorking for Perimeter Aviation gave me a different perspective within the aviation industry. Operating out of their own small terminal, Perimeter used smaller planes to fly into rural and remote communities in Northern Manitoba.I spent a short time here in the Reservations department – taking flight reservations via telephone and providing information to passengers – before applying for an administrative position that had just opened up in the Medevac department. -
Pass Control Officer & Security GuardAvion Security Services Mar 2005 - Nov 2005Winnipeg, Manitoba, CanadaThis was the job that made me fall in love with aviation and travel. I was privileged to have access to almost all areas of the Winnipeg International Airport (old terminal) where I learned about many of the jobs that are integral to airport operations.* Worked within a highly restricted security environment as a Pass Control Officer in the administration building. Responsible for processing employee applications for Restricted Area Passes, in accordance with Transport Canada and Winnipeg Airports Authority (WAA) regulations. Selected to assist with the airport’s changeover to a biometric security system – this included setting up fingerprint and iris scans for all employees.* Spent the last couple of months here as a Security Guard in the main terminal, acting as a Customer Liaison, greeting passengers and checking boarding passes at the U.S. Customs Checkpoint.
