Reservoir lands planning guides TVA management decisions on natural resources and property administration to manage its lands in a sustainable manner for present and future generations. TVA manages approximately 293,000 acres of public property around 46 reservoirs in the 7 states of the Tennessee River Valley.

Review of shoreline construction activities: TVA reviews more approximately 2,000 construction proposals each year to ensure that shoreline construction activities are compatible with all aspects of TVA’s integrated management of the river system, including flood control, land use, recreation, power generation and water quality management.Management of TVA land: TVA originally acquired approximately 1.3 million acres of land in the Tennessee Valley. The construction and operation of the reservoir system inundated approximately 470,000 acres with water. TVA has already transferred or sold approximately 508,000 acres, the majority of which was transferred to other federal and state agencies for public uses. TVA currently owns approximately 293,000, acres which continue to be managed pursuant to the TVA Act.Watershed improvement projects: With its Clean Water Initiative, TVA builds partnerships with community residents, businesses and government agencies to promote watershed protection. The Clean Water Initiative encourages improving shoreline conditions, planting vegetation and installing structures intended to improve aquatic life, collecting waste and litter from the water and more.
