While much of the coverage focused on economic and financial issues, including devaluation, debt restructuring talks and a banking crisis, as well as the expansion efforts of state-oil company PDVSA and the nation’s role in OPEC, this was also a period of unprecedented political turmoil in Venezuela that included the food riots of 1989, two coup attempts in 1992 and the peaceful ouster of the president in 1993.
