About Heather Slinn
My dissertation research encompassed chemical, microbial and community ecology. Specifically, I investigated the community assembly of fungal communities in plants (leaves and seeds) and fungal mediated interactions between plants and their herbivores. I use culture independent approaches such as metabarcoding and high throughput sequencing as well as culture dependent techniques and Sanger sequencing to identify fungal taxa. I use bioinformatics and R to answer my questions. In the future, I plan to use my computational biology skills and knowledge about plant microbiomes to help identify crops that are on a disease trajectory based on their microbial communities and improving crop resiliency with microbial inoculations.Outside of my research, I am a co-coordinator for the Guelph chapter of the 500 women scientists organization. You can find me biking around Guelph, knitting, olympic weightlifting and tending to my home garden.
