I edit research grant proposals for early-career clinical and translational scientists seeking funding, primarily from the NIH. My work involves helping researchers make clear, evidence-based arguments for why their work should be funded, and making strategic recommendations about how best to frame a proposed project for an R01 application.

Projects include:+ Edit science-related projects including doctoral dissertations, academic research papers, scientific fellowship applications, and governmental reports. Subject matter has included cognitive and developmental psychology, teaching methods, biological oceanography, life sciences, water quality guidelines, and geoscience. + Edit and proofread additional projects, including books, grants, newsletters, and web copy. Books I copyedited or proofread in 2019 include Gifts From the Goddess (Michael M. Bowden), A Whore's Manifesto (Kay Kassirer), and Disrupting the Bystander (A.V. Flox).+ Managed and edited all content on The Write Life (thewritelife.com), a blog that helps writers earn from their craft. Liaised with freelance writers, edited all contributions for content and clarity, planned content strategy, optimized content for keywords. Co-executed a three-day flash sale, including writing FAQ page and gathering usability feedback, that resulted in 435 sales and $34K revenue. Helped launch the site from scratch in July 2013.+ Assigned and edited all posts on The Penny Hoarder (thepennyhoarder.com), a blog about unusual ways to earn and save money, from May 2014 to August 2015, when I was hired full time. Conducted developmental and copy edits on posts up to 6,000 words in length, liaised with and oversaw network of freelance writers, and brainstormed unique and engaging story ideas.+ Completed developmental edits on, formatted and published You Deserve to Love Your Job, an 11,000-word Kindle ebook aimed at young professionals.+ Copyedited proposal and sample chapters for Pivot, a guide to career changes, which was acquired and published by Portfolio / Penguin.

I edited and wrote blog posts, how-to guides, landing pages, emails, product copy, signage, and other marketing materials for this Canadian outdoor retail co-op.

After working on The Penny Hoarder as an independent contractor for more than a year, I was hired full time as employee #4. At this bootstrapped and profitable digital media startup, I helped build a team of writers and editors, assigned and edited blog posts, oversaw a network of freelance writers, and helped plan a content strategy to grow our readership. The Penny Hoarder offers unusual personal finance advice to help readers put more money in their pockets. At the end of my tenure, it had more than 16 million monthly visitors and more than 4 million Facebook fans, and was #32 on the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing privately held companies (#1 in the media category).

Camp Summit Outdoor Education Centre is an overnight camp facility which uses adventure-based learning to help students develop curiosity, self-confidence, leadership, teamwork, and life skills. I coordinated and led all female counsellors and staff, including training, support, and debriefing. In addition, I managed safety and team dynamics while instructing campers in outdoor activities, such as rock climbing, high ropes, archery, camp craft, and canoeing.

The YWCA High School Mentorship Program matches girls in grades 11 and 12 with adult female mentors to help them explore their career and education options, learn leadership and life skills, gain a positive role model and be better prepared for their futures.I oversaw all aspects of the program, including recruiting volunteers and students, conducting training sessions for all participants, planning program events, and monitoring match dynamics throughout the year.

YWCA Career Zone (now WorkBC Employment Services Centre - Career Zone Youth) is a drop-in resource centre for male and female jobseekers ages 16 to 30. It offers a range of free services such as job boards, career advising, and resume editing.I assisted youth with employment-related needs, such as resume writing, job search skills and computer support. I also coordinated client intake, managed files, maintained client database, booked appointments and responded to phone inquiries from clients and the public.

Take a Hike is an alternative education program that engages at-risk youth through a unique combination of adventure-based learning, academics, counseling, and community involvement. Students in the Take a Hike program often struggle with issues that have inhibited their success in the mainstream school system such as drug and alcohol addiction, physical and mental abuse, criminal activity, low self-esteem, depression, and/or trauma. The ultimate goal of the Take a Hike alternative education program is that barriers to learning are minimized, personal issues are addressed, and students achieve a greater level of social and academic success.I designed, created, and implemented a mentorship program to support grade 12 students through the transition from high school to their next step. I recruited and trained mentors, introduced matches, and monitored match progress as the students set goals and worked towards realizing them.

A Little More Good was an online magazine that profiled businesses, organizations, and individuals doing good in Metro Vancouver. While Editor in Chief, I created an editorial calendar, managed a team of 15 volunteer writers and edited all written site content. As Story Director, I wrote weekly articles and monthly newsletters promoting charitable organizations and philanthropic people in Vancouver, and I ensured that all articles were relevant to our mission.

The NYRC U19 Program's (now High School Program) mission is to build excellent young women and men by using rugby to develop life skills, including goal-setting, accountability, money management, and responsible decision-making. The program combines athletic training with academic support, mentorship, and leadership opportunities to help players develop into strong students and leaders. I managed all logistics for the team, including planning team trips and college visits. I negotiated rental rates, planned activities, and organized campus tours for 10 coaches and 60 players. In addition, I searched for and applied for grants and completed grant-writing programs at The Foundation Center in NYC.

The program combines athletic training with academic support, mentorship, and leadership opportunities to help players develop into strong students and leaders. As a coach, I introduced teens aged 14 to 18 to rugby, taught proper techniques, and assessed their development. I helped players set individual goals for rugby, academics and health, and supported their follow-through. Over the course of a year, I mentored one player through the completion of his high school requirements and the difficulties of the college application process.

Steve & Barry's was a clothing company focused on providing quality clothing at an affordable price point. It was best known for its celebrity clothing line partnerships with Stephon Marbury, Sarah Jessica Parker, Amanda Bynes, and Venus Williams.While on the real estate team, I negotiated aggressive, below-market-rate, multi-million dollar deals with senior real estate developers and brokers in nine states. I researched site demographics, maintained negotiations database, and presented promising sites to the National Director of Real Estate. I also introduced the company to and ensured positive relations with industry professionals at one international and two national retail real estate conferences.

I analyzed sales data in order to successfully forecast the next season’s buys and coordinated effective inventory management by tracking & prioritizing shipments.

Princeton University's annual outdoor orientation program gives first-year students a chance to explore the outdoors, meet a diverse group of new classmates, and navigate the transition to college life with the support of upperclass leaders.I was selected as a Leader Trainer after two years of exceptional performance as a Leader. In that new role, I taught backcountry survival skills to new leaders and assessed their skill levels and awareness of group dynamics to evaluate their competency to lead trips. As a Leader, I took groups of ten incoming students on week-long wilderness backpacking trips, managing group dynamics, facilitating discussions, ensuring group safety, and mentoring participants.

Princeton University's annual outdoor orientation program gives first-year students a chance to explore the outdoors, meet a diverse group of new classmates, and navigate the transition to college life with the support of upperclass leaders.I worked with three colleagues to coordinate all aspects of 68 backpacking trips for 800 participants: planning routes and menus, organizing support staff, establishing emergency evacuation protocols, and marketing the trip to students and parents. I managed the food budget of $37,000, and was under-budget by $6,000 while maintaining quality and increasing quantity of the food ordered.

+ Designed and implemented a study to assess the effects of physical activity on the rate of neurogenesis in rats, cared for animal subjects, and collected brains at the end of the study period.+ Analyzed results, wrote report, and created charts and diagrams to show findings.

+ Assisted with research on rate of cell proliferation in the hippocampus of immature mice (<4 weeks).+ Managed and cared for my breeding colony of 30+ subjects as well as lab’s additional 100+ mice.
