About Heba Hashmi

Maritime Archaeologist and Heritage Manager, aiming to combine my international academic training with nine years of field experience in Pakistan, in order to set new standards for the heritage industry in the country. My roles so far have centred on understanding the nuances of grant management and project development in some of the best institutions in the country, including the internationally acclaimed Aga Khan Trust for Culture. This experience has amply prepared me for the task of introducing, for the first time in Pakistan, the professional discipline of Maritime Archaeology. In 2020, I co-founded the Maritime Archaeology and Heritage Institute (MAHI), the first platform dedicated to the exploration of maritime archaeology in Pakistan and the Western Indian Ocean region. One of the primary aims of MAHI was to set up an Inventory of Maritime Archaeological Sites along the coast of Sindh and Balochistan. After the success of MAHI, I have now launched a new platform HACRA (Heritage, Archaeology and Cultural Research Associates) - which aims to expand our scope beyond maritime archaeology into terrestrial archaeology, heritage management and digital tourism. I am also closely involved with different universities in Pakistan, particularly to introduce the academic study of Heritage Management at a postgraduate level, also a first for Pakistan.

  • Aga Khan Trust For Culture

Aga Khan Trust For Culture Sep 2017 - Feb 2019
    Lahore, Pakistan
As Project Development Officer, I:- Coordinated the Silk Roads Responsible Tourism Initiative, which included 22 projects spread over 4 Strategic Change Objectives to be implemented by 4 AKDN agencies. The resulting automated GMS minimised the errors of manual field reports, streamlined communication with the head office, and allowed for a detailed analysis of fundraising trends across the AKTC network over the last 30 years.- Coordinated and prepared two annual reports for the Parks Impact Measurement System, which involved analysing and graphically representing large amounts of raw data collected from visitor surveys, identifying trends from previous cycles, and disseminating the results to the park managers in each country for quality improvement.
