About Hector Bailey

I am bilingual Italian and English and am a highly proficient Spanish speaker.I am have completed a BSc in Biochemistry. During 2021-22 I worked in a CRO called LGC Ltd, examining saftey and efficacy of clinical trial samples from phase 1 to phase 4 and open label studies. This allowed me to develop a wide range of assay skills and working to a GCP and GLP standard in a FDA, MRHA and EMA regulated environment. After completing my BSc I worked with Emergex Vaccine Holdings Ltd, this company allowed me to explore the exciting new age of vaccine technology, using their bespoke gold nanoparticle technology. This allowed me to gain a much deeper understanding of pathogen-patient interactions and allowed me to develop and run my own experiments on Flow and Mass Cytometers.I was accepted to a postion under Dr Tim Guilford with the Oxford Navigation group, exploing Foraging and Navigation in Pelagic Seabirds, which began in October 2024.

University Of Oxford Oct 2024 - Present
    Oxford, England, United Kingdom
I have joined the OxNav Group, under the Behaviour and Biomechanics section of Oxford university. I am primarily interested in spatial cognition, navigation & migration in seabirds, but also in foraging efficiency and behaviour. We undertake research on the British Isles and abroad, mainly on Procellariiformes using the forefront of GPS, GLS and Immersion logger data and use an 'ethoinformatics' approach to analysing data. This involes the application of supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques applied to these datastreams to identify, map and interpret discrete behavioural states. Similar analyses can be used to identify decision points in birds' trajectories also, such as when they begin to feed or when they begin to navigate home to the colony.

  • Lega Navale Italiana Sezione Ventotene
    Summer Sailing Instructor
Lega Navale Italiana Sezione Ventotene Apr 2016 - Sep 2019
    Ventotene, Latium, Italy
Working in a big and diverse team of instructors teaching young children to sail, ages 5 to 18 mostly but also including families all together as well. The work is so rewarding as we instil a love for sailing to the beginners. It is key to have good teamwork in order to keep the children safe and ensure that the lesson plan is executed to that they can, learn as well as finding enjoyment. Communication is an important skill here as many aspects of sailing involve highly complex physics and it is important to be able to explain this with no jargon so the pupils can understand how it works, it is also key between instructors ensuring the boats do not collide and remain close to the safety boat.I also developed leadership skills as after working there for 4 summers i became one of the more senior instructors and had to take many junior instructors under my wing and mentor them and feedback and give advice on their teaching style and skill, this also involved taking charge of sessions and monitoring all the boats from the safety boat making sure all the boats were ok and that all the children were happy and not scared. This came to a culmination when I lead the trip we offered to a group of orphaned immigrants who were terrified of the sea as they had only really experienced it during the horrible voyage from Africa to Europe, I was heart warmed after a tentative start resulted in laughs and smiles and people learning very quickly despite a language barrier. it was a joy to have been a part of a transformation from being scared of boats and the sea to inspire so much joy and love for it.
  • Freycinet Experience Walk
    Hiking Guide/ Lodge Coordinator
Freycinet Experience Walk Sep 2018 - Apr 2019
    Hobart, Tasmania, Australia
In a sustainable ecotourism venture in remote SE Tasmania; I was responsible for guiding a group of 10 guests with another guide for 20+km walks along the coast. this required high levels of organisation due to the remote location I was required to plan and pack very carefully preparing for all situations including helicopter evacuations due to the lack of roads, this highly increases the importance of the risk assessment and coordination and teamwork between the guides to have all the necessary equipment and make sure the guest are safe and enjoying the experience. Communication, with 4 days in close proximity with guests from 5am to 11pm. And answering any questions about the diverse nature to be found there to the guests, my curiosity drove me to read many aboriginal texts from the area and I also spoke to an elder and received his permission to share his knowledge to the guests. As a Lodge Coordinator I oversaw the cooking and maintenance of the lodges while the guests were out on the walks. And also, in charge of the logistical side of transport and transfers which required high levels of organisation and communication within the team. It was also key to carry out all my maintenance and cleaning to the highest of standards as the condition of the accommodation reflects the business as a whole and I maintained the reputation of the company.
