I wrote and presented a proposal of ecological restoration for Middle Beach’s sand dune system, in Isabela.The presentation’s objective was to reach and educate the audience present at the Corona Fest Event (2017), around 2000 people, to achieve the fundraising needed for the proposal.

"Because I’ve been involved in environmental conservation and community self-management for many years, it’s something that I love, since I took the reins of the grocery store that belonged to my great-grandfather, then to my grandfather and finally to my uncle… There I worked for as long as I can remember, and the plan is to gather all those passions in a single place,” said Varela, explaining that Juan Del Pueblo's earnings will be invested in three areas: the community; its school, SU José A. Vargas; and their livelihood. "The question is, what can be improved in the community? Could be road maintenance, filling in holes, helping someone with a big need; at the school, we want to create scholarships to help the kids," he said. Juan Del Pueblo, whose opening is planned for next February, will have an area with computer stations and internet to facilitate the students’ homework. It will also have a small community library. "And, in the future, we’ll create a route from the business to the irrigation channel, which is a very nice area," the businessman added. Varela has enjoyed the neighborhood’s support to fulfill his dream. "I have been working for a year; the community, the people, have given me donations to make this a success; it is not only my achievement, but that of a complete sector," emphasized the young man. Founder of Vida Marina, a program which, in coordination with Public Relations, established eco-friendly marketing, workshops, seminars, education and outreach. Fishing line recycling project At its inception, the Fishing Line Recycling Program's proposal encompassed the entire Puerto Rican archipielago. It delineated the placemnet, maintenance, and administration of over 100 containers.Conducted train-the-trainer sessions for volunteer groups from the University of Puerto Rico's Mayagüez, Ponce, Utuado, Humacao, Cayey, Rio Piedras y Bayamón campuses. These groups conducted seminars and workshops in the areas surrounding their campus. They also administered and maintained the collections containers.Sand Dune Restauration Program.Taking advantage of the experienced gained during my tenure at Organización ambiental Noroeste Unido Pro Ambiente (NUPA), I developed the Sand Dune Restoration Program. The litoral symbiotic eco-systems were improved by 65% in several northern municipalities. The program held well over 100 workshops effectively integrating the community into the program.Fishermen Communities in Action This program impacted 15 coastal communities engaging them in a friendly competition to collect trash and contaminants. The program ordanized resident led boards at each community and provided them with the equipment necessary to accomplish said task. This project, coordinated by biologist Tamara Trinidad, was able to collect thousands of pounds of garbage.
