My research focuses on fatigue and fracture mechanics of Aerospace materials and structures by conducting various experiments and developing Finite Element Analysis models (ANSYS and LS-DYNA). During my Ph.D. work, I have been studying Shot Peening process and its effects on high cycle fatigue in aerospace materials. Shot Peening is a cold working process which involves a large number of impacts on the surface of metal components. It increases resistance to fatigue and to reduce stress corrosion cracking of metal parts by creating a hardened layer with compressive residual stress. I have conducted experiments to apply manual Shot Peening process on metallic parts and to find plastic deformation changes. Especially, my work has focused on mechanical surface and subsurface modifications of aerospace materials induced by high velocity impact. I have also developed the numerical models to predict the effect of the multiple impacts in terms of plastic deformation and residual stress.
