The Rev. Hee Jung Yu is an ordained Elder in the California-Pacific Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. She has a Master of Divinity from Claremont School of Theology.Hee Jung’s professional ministry encompasses expertise in both hospital and local church settings. She completed her initial unit of CPE at Vitas Hospice Care in West Covina, CA. She was one of three Residents chosen for the highly competitive CPE Residency and Fellowship at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Westwood, CA. Hee Jung completed another four units as a Fellow there and then was asked to work as an On-Call Chaplain for UCLA Health. Hee Jung’s specialties as a Chaplain included ministry on these hospital units: Medical Intensive CarePediatric Hematology and OncologyInternal Medicine, andAdolescent Eating Disorder and Psychiatry. In the local church setting, Rev. Yu has engaged in cross-ethnic ministries throughout her tenure. At Emmanuel, Hee Jung successfully served as the first female senior pastor in the church’s 75 years of ministry. She played an integral role in the administrative process of Emmanuel’s merger with other local United Methodist congregations. At University, Hee Jung has helped the church connect with the broader Redlands community, particularly with their neighbors at Franklin Elementary School. Under her leadership, University has become a strong supporter of public education. Hee Jung did not expect to be a pastor when she moved to the USA to attend USC where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. She remained at USC and was pursuing a PhD in Chemistry when her life changed dramatically. During her graduate study at USC, Hee Jung fell critically ill. Facing her own mortality, Hee Jung began a quest for divine purpose in her life. This quest became pivotal in her decision to change vocations. Through her torment and her experience with friends who graciously walked the difficult journey with her, Hee Jung became a pastor who preaches a God who is faithful even when we are most vulnerable.
