Established R&D organization for Olympus Corp. and designed the business and strategic plans for its operation. Developed technology roadmap for wireless communication & networking for Olympus’ products. Technologies of focus included UWB, Wireless USB, Bluetooth, Wireless IP/DLNA and digital terrestrial broadcasting (ISDB-T). Oversaw and participated in all aspects of modem design and development, incl. system, software, hardware, platform, standards, patents. Interfaced with a variety of customers and suppliers in Japan and the US. Managed vendors and their contract negotiations.

Established a technology center (in San Diego) & led a team of engineers for wireless/cellular application development based on Quicksilver’s ACM (Adaptive Computing Machine) reconfigurable hardware and associated software platform. Successfully managed and contributed to key technical issues on design, simulation, and implementation of hardware systems for various parts of cellular (cdma2000 WCDMA), and WLAN technologies (802.11a). Led several NRE projects for major customers (Nokia, Toyota, Matsushita, NTT Docomo, …). Led multi-disciplinary project teams across multiple geographical sites.

Designed, simulated, and implemented various system and DSP algorithms for IS-95 and cdma2000 mobile phones (searcher enhancements, quick paging channel detection, phase estimation, Viterbi decoding for paging channel, baseband filter, Multi-carrier 3x filtering, etc.). Attended and contributed to the standardization of 3GPP2.

Contributed to the design and deployment of the first CDMA cellular network in Chicago. Developed detailed procedures and acceptance criteria for CDMA network deployment and optimization. Supervised and ran numerous field tests on different aspects of the system and network. Interfaced with base station and handset manufacturers as well as other cellular operators. Evaluated performance of early CDMA handsets in the field and in the lab. Analyzed and refined Stage 3 Interoperability test procedures; monitored and analyzed the test results. Conducted simulation analyses and field tests to understand the impact of receiver intermodulation products on the performance of the handsets in unfriendly conditions. Chaired CDG (CDMA Development Group) Power Balancing Team. Attended and contributed to TR45.5 and CDG task groups. Attended and contributed to Lucent RF Engineering Group, working on all aspects of CDMA system engineering using Lucent base stations. Managed the development of a series of computer programs to enhance and optimize the field data analysis process. Evaluated new products and technologies: smart antennas, superconductive filters, air-ground cellular communication, 3G cellular systems, etc.

Managed a team of 11 engineers in cellular/PCS/ESMR/TDMA RF network design, implementation, optimization, and expansion. Designed cellular and indoor wireless PBX networks. Researched and analyzed topics in 2.5G technologies including interference issues with fixed microwave links. Analyzed interference problems in cellular systems. Developed a phased, just-in-time training curriculum for network design engineers and managers, consisting of over 40 short courses, which integrated theory with practice. Taught technical courses in the Cellular Institute.
